Book Trailers

If you're a book video maker, what do you feel is your biggest challenge?

For me, it is matching up the music. I think the music is so very important to a video. I may go through a dozen or more before I find the one I think fits.

If you're a book video viewer, what really turns you off about a video?

What an interesting way to get people interested in reading! Book trailers are like movie trailers, but for books! You can find them all over the internet now, but here is a site that's featuring them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers
This may be a bassackwards answer to your question, but the tough thing to me, and the biggest peeve is trying to figure out how to make headway in contests (such as the Covey or P&E) against work that is total, complete dreck--jjust pans of a romance cover with cards popping up using goofy transitions--but wins anyway.

It's got me scratching my head, all right.
Hey, the thing that gets me, Linton, is that we have to compete with professionals that use actors and audio rather than words. It feels more like a movie than a book. Well, I guess we just have to do our best and hope it's appreciated. Good luck!
I understand completely, Theresa. I'm a slow reader, too. So I usually have to stop the video so I can read it. That doesn't bother me, though because I know I'm slow. I was talking to my son in law when I was making my trailer and asked his opinion. He said something that brought me back to reality. He's a fast reader and this is what he said, "Hey, Mom, it's too slow. If you have it this slow, you'll lose your reader. They'll click off of it because it will be boring to them." So I made it the speed that my imovie recommended and showed it to him. He said that was much better. I asked my daughter about it and she said that she was a slow reader, too, but was able to keep up. So I believe that we need to find a happy medium. We can't have it too slow for the speed readers yet not too fast for the slower readers. Man! What dilemma!
It has to short, about 2 mins. Music is important; so is story telling. On camera portrayals of characters by actors is where I'm headed...
Oh, yes! The music! It just has to fit or it won't give the viewer the feel of what the book is all about. I saw this one video in which you read the synopsis of the book along with photos. I showed it to my daughters and one loved it and the other said it had too much to read and didn't like it. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed it because the music set the tone for me. So you see, you can't please everybody!
