The horrific killing and abuse of women in the name of honor and religion is the subject the novel, Light of the Desert.
Known as honor killing, a father, or sometimes a brother, can kill a daughter if she has dishonored the family name. The main character is a young woman named Noora who is framed by her jealous sister to appear a sharmouta, or a woman of ill reputation. When her father finds out, he is pressured by the radical religious order “Men of Faith, Honor and Justice” to kill her, removing the shame from his family. He drowns her – or so he thinks – and the novel unfolds with Noora running for her life.
